I am looking for a website designer who is just beginning. I’m looking for someone who is okay to grow with me as my business grows. I am happy to pay them off slowly.
I am a web and graphic designer myself. At first I was skipping the post in the Facebook group as I wasn’t her target audience. After a few hours I had to reply back. There were so many triggers in there I wanted to resolve.
If you are going to start doing your business will you grow with your clients too and will they pay you slowly too? What is stated in your contract? As a web and graphic designer I advise you to gather your infos first hand.
Dig deep. Do the ICA work. Create the persona. Write your mission statement. Your services page. Work with a copywriter if needed. Maybe trade services. When you have all this ready, start working with a designer. Like the word indicates they design things. They make it look beautiful.
They won’t edit text. Doing things slowly means you don’t have a direction. The price won’t be right, because there is always something to change. We grow. We evolve. So does our work. If you take things slowly, you need to pay your designer hourly and not per project.
So my advice. Do the hard work first. The design in the end is the final mile. And don’t rely on your website, unless you set up a shop, to do business. You can do it before. For the sanity of your mind and the future designer, I encourage you to please ask yourself:
Why am I resisting a quick turnaround time? Why do I want to do it slowly? (maybe are you afraid of publishing your work?) If money is the issue, save it first, gather your material and when you are ready book the service and pay the designer.
I believe that whatever we do, we do right. As professionals we are training our skills. We are spending hours and money to polish our skills. Why is it dangerous to start working with a client like mentioned above?
Reading between the lines: I don’t have the money to pay a pro. I am afraid of getting told what to do by a professional / more advanced person.
Grow with me
Reading between the lines: I am not sure what I want. I will delay projects and won’t provide you with the material on time. There will be endless discussion what the view of the designer is “because they are the professional”. Endless phone / zoom calls without an end result.
Pay them off slowly
Reading between the lines: I don’t have any money at all. I can’t afford a pro designer so I need someone I can bombard with questions and I expect an answer in return. I don’t care if the knowledge took the designer years to polish. I won’t pay on time as there will be other things coming up and I am sure the designer, who should also be a newbie, will understand that the beginning of business is hard. (It doesn’t have to! And I am happy to coach you on this here.)
How would you react? I’d like to get your feedback in the comments below 🙂
